Young, Rush and Wallace figure out what is going on
Spoiler Warning
This is a recap of SG·U Episode 5. Plot details revealed
This episode begins with Greer having his “kino snippet”. He seems pretty calm considering the Destiny is about to fly directly into a star. After the title screen Colonel Young addresses the crew. There is no power. The Destiny is flying directly into a star. The crew “are having another bad day”. Following the status report he announces that there will be a lottery for fifteen spots on the working shuttle. In addition he will choose two more people who will pilot and have the necessary survival skills. He also announces that he will not be part of the lotery. The crew are understandably frustrated. A montage shows us Sgt Becker downing some pills. Matthew and Cloe hit the bedroom and the second sex scene in Universe.
Camile visits Col. Young and tries to weasel her way onto the shuttle. Young, having none of it, threatens to remove her name from the lottery. She promptly retreats. Meanwhile, in his quarters, Eli has a flashback of his mother giving him grief about not attending a job interview. Meanwhile Cloe and Matthew were discussing who was going on the shuttle. As per usual Cloe was being her pessimistic hopeless self. Yawn.
Eli continues his promotion of the “message-in-a-bottle” kino. He is still trying to get everyone to talk into the kino to preserve a record of their presence. Cloe volunteers for her “kino snippet”. Elsewhere on the ship Young approaches Rush to find out which of the three planets the lottery winners are bound for. One of the three is on the other side of the star but being between the two planets which are too hot and too cold placed it in the “Goldilocks Zone“. The Shuttle will be flying blind to the planet.
Rush requests not to be chosen as one of the two people Young chooses. He goes even further and asks to be removed from the lottery as a whole. Young, surprised, offers an olive branch to Rush and apologizes to Rush for not listening to him in the first place. Rush maintains it would have made little difference. As Young starts to leave Rush asks who he had chosen as the last two for the shuttle. “Scott and Johanson” is the reply. Rush admits his surprise that Greer was not chosen. Young admits he hopes Greer makes it via the lottery and refuses to hear Rush’s suggestion to fix the vote. “There’ll be those who’ll thinkg you did anyway” informs Rush as he leaves the area.
The lottery commences and 15 are chosen. Once all names are called Sgt. Spencer (played by Josh Blacker) tries to incite the remaining crew into claiming more space in the shuttle. Greer steps in and introduces the butt of his rifle to Spencer’s head, promptly putting him down. Naturally this subdues the crowd. Goodbyes are said and both the shuttle and a kino depart the Destiny. As the shuttle disappears from view, the remaining crew share their final plans.
As Young and Greer make their way towards their quarters we discover why Greer was in the Brigg when Universe started: Flattening Col. Telford. It seems that both men have a dislike for Telford.
Young has his “kino snippet”
When Sgt. Spencer finally wakes up wanders around the ship. First encountering some of the crew playing cards, followed by another group praying the Lord’s prayer. Rush listens to Classical music while finishing “100 pages of a truly mediocre book”. Young removes his wedding band and lays down. Greer strips off and sits on the edge of his bed gazing out at the approaching star.
Meanwhile aboard the shuttle Sgt. Riley realizes he just turned 31. Brody and Scott have a look at the Planet readings to discover that its not much more than a cold rock with little vegetation. They note that Destiny should be buried in the star. On board Destiny, Rush figures something is up and makes his way to the console to find out why they haven’t crashed. He is pleasantly surprised to find that the ship was recharging from the corona of the star! Elsewhere lights start coming on throughout the vessel. Young arrives with the statement: “There’s a rumor going around, we’re still here.” Rush explains that the stars themselves power the Destiny. She is “quite literally solar powered.”
Back on the shuttle all are delighted to hear that the Destiny is not destroyed. When they try to rendezvous with Destiny they realize there is not enough power to do so. Wallace and Rush come up with a plan to get the shuttle to slingshot around the planet to reach the desired velocity. After crash landing back into the Destiny the whole crew finally take a moment to be happy and relax. Rush and Young have another moment and Young begins to doubt Rush’s motives about the lottery…. “Lotta work”
