Eye candy spetacular but have we seen it all before already?

Avatar, the new movie by James Cameron, comes out next week in the US.  Despite all the hype I can not seem to get motivated for this movie.  Maybe it’s just me but it seems to have borrowed too much of itself from other sources. Check it out:

  1. The Battle for Tera.  Yes I know they are not entirely the same but the principle of a huge conflict between man and some peace loving aliens seems all too familiar. Especially when the one man falls for a female of the other species, changes sides, etc etc.
  2. The Matrix. Do those Mech suits look like a “shiny”er version of those featured in “Revolutions”? Or is that just me? The Principle of the avatar itself? Residual Self Image perhaps? (I know its a bit of a stretch but with all the other similarities I had to put that one in)
  3. Halo 3.  The futuristic helicopters look like slightly enlarged versions of the UNSC Hornets.
  4. The Smurfs. Albeit large overgrown angry smurfs, the Navi, are way too similar to the smurfs, Clearly the Female Navi is Smurfette and I would not be surprised to find Pappa smurf in the movie somewhere! It seems South Park were right on the money.
  5. Aliens: Colonial marines anyone? I don’t mind this one so much. He made that movie too and one can never have enough of those guys :)
  6. Avatar: Even the name itself is ripped off of “Avatar: The Last Air Bender”.

If this were a school/university project the creators would have been expelled for plagiarism without so much as a second look!

I have to say though The visual effects are pretty phenomenal.  If anything will get me to see the movie that will probably succeed.  However there seems to be one or two stray original thoughts in the movie somewhere. Here’s hoping they are strong enough to mute everything else.

I did get a giggle out of the last bit of the trailer.  “Director of: Aliens” Cool move arguably one of the best in the series… “Terminator 2″ ditto… ” True Lies”   Wait? What? A guilty pleasure sure but hardly a stellar show like the previous two.  It’s pretty much the skid mark in his movie career.

Anyways enough of my ranting.

Hahaha I love it, the skid mark in his movie career.

I’ve actually kept away from any trailers for this film and I’m going to wait and see it for myself before looking at anything else. Too many movies have been ruined by trailers and spoilers.
